Nurse Consulting

What is a Patient Advocate?

Blue Skies Nursing “Patient Advocate” service is when a Blue Skies Nurse accompanies you or your loved one to a doctor’s appointment or is at the hospital bedside. Having a licensed health care provider at your side gives you the assurance that the right questions are being asked and the interpretation of the answers are clear.

As a “Patient Advocate” the nurse will safely transport and accompany you to and from your appointment. The nurse will be a liaison between you and your doctor by assisting you to explain the issues, asking the appropriate questions, and making sure you understand the situation and the doctor’s instructions. The nurse will then pick up any necessary prescriptions and go over these with you and answer any questions. The nurse will then complete a written summary of the visit for the patient and any loved ones in need of this information.

In the hospital, the nurse will coordinate with the hospital so that she/he is at the bedside when the physician visits. She will interpret information, ask appropriate questions, make sure you understand and agree with how your care is being managed. The Blue Skies nurse can keep family informed as well.

This is a wonderful option for the family of the patient if you live out of town, work a full-time job, or are unable to accompany a family member to their appointments yourself for a variety of reasons. This allows you to be appropriately informed and be confident your loved one is getting excellent care from the nurse as well as their provider.
